It seems that John Ensign, the Republican Senator from Nevada, has finally lost his 9 month long gamble with one of his campaign staffers. In the newest case of Silver State hypocrisy, the 4th most senior Republican in the Senate admitted to an extramarital affair and stepped down as chairman of the Republican Policy Committee. According to his confession and other news sources Ensign's mistress and her husband both worked on his 2008 Senate campaign. Furthermore, it appears that the only reason why the senator confessed to having the affair is that he was being blackmailed by the husband of his mistress for a considerable sum of money.
It is important to remember that this is the same senator who:
- Is a member of the Promise Keepers, a male evangelical group that promotes marital fidelity
- Got elected on a platform of social and religious conservatism and family values
- Took to the floor of the US Senate in 2004 to "defend the sanctity of marriage" and urged the passage of the Federal Marriage Amendment Act to impose a federal ban of same-sex marriage
- Urged former President Bill Clinton to resign during the 1998 impeachment

Does this remind you of another Republican Nevada hypocrite? How about Governor Jim Gibbons, who had the audacity to veto a domestic partnership bill on moral grounds even while going through a messy divorce caused by his own infidelity. Fortunately, Nevada lawmakers had the courage to overturn that veto; and, if all goes well, Nevada voters will have the common sense to vote their newest hypocrite out of public office.
To think that there was talk of Ensign running for president in 2012.
